The Historic Meaning of the Wreath
Many ancient cultures have used the wreath as a religious symbol. In ancient Greek times the wreath was called a diadem which means “a thing bound around". Early Germanics used the wreath as a symbol of the power of life overcoming the destructive influences of winter.
The wreath worn on the head at sporting events or celebrations of victory at war was a sign of success. Kings and Princes then used the wreath as a symbol that they were victorious and successful This lead to the wreath being associated with royalty. The wreath was often made with laurel, olive, oak, parsley, palm leaves and grapevine.
Women also wore wreaths on their head at weddings. These wreaths often were called coronets and were made from field flowers, orange blossoms, myrtle, or rosemary. They symbolized faithfulness and a long life together.
Funeral wreaths were made of roses, daffodils, poppies, amaranth, statice, plants that symbolize eternal life or remembrance.
The Meaning and Use of Christmas Wreaths today
The wreath is still used at weddings, funerals, festivals and for celebratory and seasonal celebrations.
Today Holiday wreaths are used as holiday decorations as beckoning adornments for our front doors, eye catching displays above the mantelpiece and as centerpieces for our tables.
A decorative front door wreath displayed on the door in the Christmas holiday season still symbolizes strength and safety. It beckons the visitor with a warm welcome and promise of safety from the cold and snow outside.
The Christian world today also applies strong Christmas symbolism and messages to the Christmas wreath. Generally the Christmas wreath is a symbol of Christian immortality with the circle representing eternal life and immortality.
The Advent wreath is a particular type of Christmas wreath with meaningful religious ceremony attached. For a detailed explanation of the meaning of the advent wreath please visit our "Meanings of Advent" page.
For some the Christmas wreath symbolizes that Christ binds this household together in love and many Christians today display the Christmas wreath for this purpose.
While some are very particular about all the elements in the wreath and what they symbolize, others have no concern for symbolism but rather enjoy the sheer beauty and fun of decorative wreaths.
Today the Holiday Wreath is often used for nothing other than as a decorative wreath and it comes in a huge range of colors, designs and styles to suit all decor preferences.
Garlands – Significance of Christmas Garland Elements
The only significance (or meaning portrayed) of the garland is that the stringing together demonstrates there is a connectedness about the items on the garland. Generally the symbolism of the garland is more about the symbolism items that are strung together than the garland itself. Many times the garland is just a decorative partner to the accompanying wreath that contains the symbolism being portrayed.
In many modern families no symbolism is intended. The color and beauty of the décor item is all they seek.
For those to whom symbolism is either very important or a fun idea to explore, we explore a few of the meanings or symbolism of the items in some of our Christmas Garlands.
